Alibaba’s Ma Eyes New Partner In Apple’s Cook


Alibaba’s founder Jack Ma and Apple’s CEO Tim Cook will discuss possibility of partnership in the electronic payments space that would give both parties access to each other’s huge home markets. Even though it looks good in theory, Doug Young, a former China company news chief for Reuters, predicts that this potential tie-up may end in an embarrassing divorce.

Alibaba and JD.com are in a trademark spat that has gone public. JD published a letter from Alibaba warning publishers against running ads with the “Double Eleven” motif, allegedly a registered trademark of Alibaba’s Tmall, for the annual “Singles’ Day”, the world’s largest online shopping day.


China, US Act to Bolster Tourism


The eighth China-US Tourism Leadership Summit, co-organized by the China National Tourism Administration (NTA) and Brand USA, held in Xiamen, Fujian province revealed that the US and China will cooperate to increase the number of tourists to 5 million between the two countries. The US plan to increase the number of direct flights and make the visa process more convenient.


China Eases Monopoly on Handling of Credit-Card Payments


China plan to allow foreign companies such as Visa Inc., MasterCard Inc. and other electronic payment processors to set up bank card-clearing operations, to open up China’s financial sector. China UnionPay Co. currently holds a near monopoly and foreign firms have been eyeing the China market for years.
